![]() Evangelist Desmond Barrett - George Henry GEORGE HENRY, STAR Writer
Name: Desmond 'Brother Lee' Barrett. Church you attend: Christiana Church of God and Bryce United in Manchester. Position in the church: Evangelist, and I am the first vice-president of the national men's movement of the Church of God. How long have you been a Christian?: I have been saved since 1983. Tell us about the moment you felt convicted: I was in my community one Sunday evening, and I saw some brothers from the United Church doing evangelism. I was about 18 at that time. I was very enthused about what they were doing, and I felt like I should have been in a position to do what they were doing. So the following Sunday, I went to church where a Missionary service was taking place and I gave my heart to the Lord at that service. I got my baptism the following year April. What has been your most challenging moment since becoming a Christian?: My most challenging moment since getting saved has to do with my in-laws. They challenged my Christianity by testing my faith many times. However, I was able to deal with it by saying to myself, like Daniel, 'As a Christian, I must be able to sleep in the den of a lion and believe that God will take me through'. That was what really helped me along. So, too, were my praying and fasting. Miraculous event in your life: I was working at a supermarket and was at home one Saturday. I had about $20 credit on my phone and I picked it up and called a friend in Canada. The Lord spoke to me and told me: 'I have never seen the righteous forsaken or seed begging bread', and He said do not call. Ten minutes after I sat down on my settee, the same friend called me and said he was in the field and felt like something was bothering me, and he went to the machine and said he had to send some cash for me. I went to collect the cash and my bad day was changed. Message to Christians: Without faith in and obedience to God, you cannot make it. Faith is what governs the Christian. You cannot do it without faith. For you to put faith in action, you will have to be obedient. It is out of your active energy that faith comes; but it is also governed by obedience to God. Message to non-Christians: Many times, you try to watch other persons who might not be living right, and sometimes it distracts you from not coming to the Lord. However, it is always better for you to come and to try it for yourself. So every non-Christian out there, I am asking you to give the Lord a chance in your life. Experience God for yourself and do not watch other persons. Favourite Bible scripture: Psalm 51. Favourite line of one of your favourite songs: 'I need Thee every hour most gracious God.'
