Bjorn Burke, Staff Reporter
In the year of 2014, hearing about a community that has never had electricity may come as a shock to most. That is the reality for community dwellers in Barry, St Catherine, who are set to receive electricity. Addressing a group at the opening of the Top Mountain Computer and Internet Access Point in St Catherine, Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining Philip Paulwell, said the necessary wiring to bring power to the community has been completed, and the area should expect to receive electricity in coming weeks. Upon previous visits to Barry, THE STAR learnt that residents did not have a need to invest in refrigerators and other appliances, as there was simply no use in doing so without electricity. Igloos and coal irons were commonplace. The report was met with much surprise by members of the public. "Weh unu really a seh? Something can guh suh?" a lady commented. Another added: "Never hear such a thing! All these years? So why them just a get electricity? Well, them can soon join in pon the bawling seh light bill too high." |
