Fresh off his three-week stint in Jamaica this past January when he trained alongside the world's fastest man Usain Bolt, Yohan Blake and Warren Weir, Australian sprint sensation Jarrod Geddes has got closer to his goal of becoming Australia's fastest man. The sprinter, dubbed 'White Lightning', delivered personal bests Saturday in the 100 and 200 metres at the 2014 Perth Classic in his home country. First, Geddes, who turns 20 in a few days' time, crossed the line third in the men's 100 metres in 10.30 seconds, bettering his previous best of 10.37. The time was behind South African Simon Magakwe's winning time of 10.21 seconds and Mosito Lehata's 10.26. The meet record of 9.88 is owned by Australia's Patrick Johnson. previous best Geddes, who had visited Jamaica for the first time in January 2013 as part of an exchange programme between Carole Beckford's Business of Sport and Hayden Knowles' Competitive Edge, did even better in the 200 metres. In it he finished second in 20.59, this time a lot closer to the South African, who stopped the clock at 20.58 seconds. His previous best was 21.12s that was run into a -3.7m/s wind in December last year. According to Knowles, who along with Norman Peart manages the athlete, the 200-metre run Saturday was only Geddes' third since he suffered a hamstring injury that required surgery a couple seasons ago. A student at Sutherland University, Geddes has had the benefit of being exposed to a number of Jamaican coaches, including Maurice Wilson at G.C. Foster College and Xavier Brown. Brown had also spent time working with him during the three-month stint the former spent in Australia in late 2013 as part of the exchange programme. |
