Windies must send strong message

Coach Ottis Gibson has urged members of the West Indies team to deliver a comeback performance heading into today's second match of their two-match Twenty20 international series at Sabina Park.

"It is the way we comeback and go about things tomorrow that matters," said Gibson, while expressing that he and the team were 'disappointed' with the result.

"I have said to the players that we need to give a really strong response, and send a strong message that what happened in the first game was just a blip on the road to retaining our (ICC World T20) trophy."

For today's fixture, which is again set to start at 2 p.m., Gibson will be hoping for an improved all-round batting display from that of the first game, which saw five batsmen getting into double figures but failing to get past 20.

trump card off-spinner

Leading that charge were openers Chris Gayle and Dwayne Smith, who made a game-high score of 18 and 16, respectively, with the others being, Marlon Samuels and Lendl Simmons, who made 16 each, and Andre Russell, who chipped in with 15.

As for the bowling, which they tried, despite their low total to defend, Gibson is likely to call up on trump card off-spinner, Sunil Narine, Ravi Rampaul, who despite looking overweight bowled a steady speed, and supplementary seamers, Dwayne Bravo, captain Darren Sammy and Russell.

There is also the leg-spin of the ever-improving Samuel Badree, who in strategically opening the bowling, tends to surprise his opponents with his accuracy and sharp bounce and turn.

These players, however, are dependent on whether or not the coaching staff and selectors decide to keep pacer Krishmar Santokie and batsman André Fletcher on the bench for a second game, given that both are in the West Indies squad for the ICC Twenty20 next month.

"They will come into the equation for the game, and tomorrow morning we will decide which eleven is going to play," Gibson said.

"Hopefully, if it is that they make the team we know what they are capable of. Santokie has been outstanding in this format in regional cricket, and Fletcher has an outstanding CPL, (and) I believe that is why he was chosen.

Ireland, in the meanwhile, who, in beating the West Indies, repeated their heroics at the same venue at the 2007 World Cup when they defeated Pakistan, will be looking to record their first series win over an ICC full-member country.
