Jamaica international Marvin Elliott is expected to be sidelined for a lengthy period after fracturing his ankle and hand, while on duty for English League One team Bristol City.

Elliott suffered the horrific injury, which also left him with a bruised head, in a clash with Oldham's James Wesolowski during a 1-1 draw on Saturday. The club expects the central midfielder, who has been at the outfit for seven years but out of a contract in the summer, to be out of action for several months.

"It looks like we won't have him for the rest of the season," boss Steve Cotterill told BBC Radio Bristol.

"I feel sorry for him, he's a good boy. He can't even use crutches because of his hand."

Cotterill added: "It's a blow for me and the dressing room but, more importantly, it's a blow for the boy because I think he was enjoying himself."

Elliott, who was a regular starter for Jamaica's Reggae Boyz during a failed bid to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, may have been part of the squad head coach Winfried Schäfer will select for upcoming matches against Switzerland and world number 20-ranked France, at the Stade Pierre Maury in Lille just ahead of the World Cup.
