Nkrumah Bonner - File

Nkrumah Bonner has rated his century against Guyana in the WICB NAGICO Super50 Tournament currently on in Trinidad and Tobago, as being his best ever one-day batting performance at the regional level.

The 25-year-old, who since representing the West Indies three years ago against England, at The Oval, has not found favour with the regional selectors, hit a topscore of 122 not out to guide Jamaica to a narrow 10-run win over the Guyanese at Queen's Park Oval on Saturday.

upped the tempo

The innings, which came off 157 balls, saw Bonner, who started slowly, but upped the tempo thereafter, hitting five sixes and eight fours, as Jamaica, electing to bat, posed a competitive 243. Guyana in reply made 233.

"A century is the benchmark for any batsman, and I am overwhelmed right now, especially knowing that my team won," said Bonner, who netted his first century against Barbados last year.

"Last year it was a similar happy feeling, but I think this one is better given the situation, the wicket and the opposition."

Bonner, who also has a four-day century to his credit, entered the game with Jamaica, 14 for one, in the fourth over having lost opener Horace Miller for six.

However, after taking time to assess pitch conditions, bowlers and losing partners at regular intervals, he soon found himself bogged down, and being one of the architects of Jamaica's pedestrian score of 97 for four in the 29th over.

His innings, however, changed a gear towards the backend of Jamaica's innings, as after finding capable allies in wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh Jr, captain David Bernard Jr, Andre Russell and Nikita Miller, he proceeded to showcase his big-hitting skills.

best chance

"It is not the easiest of wickets to bat on and as such you had to give yourself the best chance of making some runs," Bonner said.

"I, however, knew that once I got in, and brought the team deep into the innings, I could always catch up, and that's what I did."

Bonner, in the meanwhile, who with the century moved his one-day average to 32.28 from 24 matches, also said he wanted to score a hundred to remind the selectors of his ability.

Jamaica, in winning the game topped Zone A, are slated to play the runner-up from Zone B on Wednesday at the same venue.
