York United captured the St Thomas Division One Captain's Bakery and Grill mid-season trophy, when they blanked Port Morant United 2-0 at Lysson Oval on Sunday. The goals came in the dying moments of the match. Daryan James netted in the 90th minute and Otis Ffriend completed the scoring three minutes, into injury time. In a lacklustre affair, York United showed more dominance in the first half and had numerous changes to score but failed to capitalise. Ffriend should have found the back of the net in the 29th minute when he pounced on a free-kick from mid-field, but Port Morant's goalkeeper, Kess Williams, robbed him of the chance. Two minutes later, Miguel Ricketts wasted another chance for York as he headed over the crossbar from close range. The second half continued in similar fashion, and it was only in the dying moments that York United began to find some useful combinations through veteran midfielder Patrick Miller, Kevin Beckford, Damion McIntosh, and Javaun Phillips. As many as four minutes of extra time were played, as earlier, referee O'Neil Williams had to be taken off on a stretcher after he twisted a leg on the bumpy field. Commenting on the game, York United's coach, Arthur 'Jetty' Mikes, said his team had the advantage throughout the game, although Port Morant United put up a good fight. "The players played to instructions, and this game just showed what is to come, as this is early season," he said. Port Morant's coach, Nigel Parris, blamed poor discipline by his team for the defeat. "York are a good team. We tried our best, but a lack of discipline in the team contributed to our defeat. However, it's early season; we can only get better." he said. President Wayne Thomas said the Lyssons field was recently resurfaced and other infrastructure put in, and he expected the surface to be much better in upcoming fixtures. |
