Western Bureau: Reigning J. Wray and Nephew St Elizabeth Major League champions Black Star FC have quietly assembled a strong squad capable of landing them a return ticket to the South Central Western Confederation Super League. Their last hurrah in the Confed happened in the 2011-12 season in which they failed to cope and were relegated. Since then, they have gone about rebuilding the core of their squad by bringing in the hard-tackling defender, Gerald Neil, to add some steel to the backline that also features Jermaine Fletcher, in support of goalkeeper Everaldo Walters. They are the current Zone A joint leaders on 11 points after five rounds (three wins, two draws). Parottee also have the same record. Black Star have been in impressing form since the start of the season and continued their assault on the Zone A standings with a big 5-1 victory against Round Hill United on the weekend. Highly-rated forward Ricardo Reid was on target twice in the 67th and 90th minutes, in a second half blitz that received momentum after Kevaughn Whyte opened the scoring in the 47th minute. Xavier Henry doubled the lead in the 57th minute before Reid scored his first. The rout was completed by Shemalee Jones in the 90th minute. Assistant coach Clive Thompson said they are retooling for an expected return to the Super League and that a strong showing in the Major League is the ticket back. "Our aim really is to return to the Super League and we can only do that by defending our Major League title and move on from there," Thompson said. Other results from the fifth round: Parottee 4 Middle Quarters PYC 2, Holland 5 Mountainside 0; Super Action 2 Burnt Ground 0, Tafari Lions 1 Appleton 1-0; Young Brazil 1 Newell United 1. |
