McLeod, Scarlett continue to impress

McLeod

IT was a good weekend in hurdles for former World Junior representative Omar Mcleod and Samantha Scarlett as both scored impressive indoor wins in their events for their college teams at meets in the United States.

McLeod the former Manchester High and Kingston College hurdler continues his impressive freshman season for the University of Arkansas last Friday as he remained perfect with another triple at home at the Arkansas/University of Texas dual meet.

Like he did the previous week where he won two individual titles, the 60-metres hurdles and the 60 metres and led his team off to a win in the 4x400 metres relays, it was the same once again. After being named South East Conference (SEC) Male Athlete of the Week for those achievements, McLeod improved his time in the 60-metres hurdles, as he won the event in 7.76 seconds, beating his 7.82 seconds done the previous week.

good feeling

Competing in the 200 metres for the first time indoors, he won the event in 21.09 seconds then returned later to help his team win the 4x400 metres relay in 3:09.83.

" It is another good feeling once again to know that I am doing so well as a freshman and to be named SEC Athlete of the Week earlier it is even more accomplished," said McLeod who is in line to capture that honour for the second week in a row.

McLeod's former teammate at Kingston College, Clive Pullen, who is also a freshman at the University of Arkansas was third in the men's long jump. Pullen posted 7.05 metres in his first and only attempt as he passed on the remaining three.

personal best

Scarlett, formerly of St. Jago High and who was a semi-finalist for Jamaica in the 100 metres hurdles at the World Junior Championships in Barcelona, Spain two years ago, posted a personal best for Auburn University in the 60-metres hurdles. Competing in the 60-metres hurdles at the Auburn Invitational meet in Alabama, Scarlett who is a junior, was impressive in winning her section in a personal best of 8.27 seconds, getting the better of Uness Chervaux who was second in 8.35 seconds. The time done by Scarlett was the third-best ever in the school history and she was very happy with her effort in her opening meet.

"I am happy to come come out in my first race this season and post a personal best. This is really good for me and I feel like I can go much faster as going into the race 8.2 was the goal for the season , so I am five meets ahead of schedule," said Scarlett who also had a two-year stint at Bethel High School in Virginia.
