60m, shot put for Grace Jackson Meet

The list of events to be contested at the 13th staging of The Queen's/Grace Jackson Meet has been bolstered for this the 13th staging with the addition of the 60 metres and shot put for both male and female.

The meet will be staged on Saturday, January 25, at the National Stadium and is slated to commence at 8:30 a.m.

The 60m, which is an invitational event, has been added to commemorate The Queen's School's 60th anniversary.

"This year is of great significance given that it is being held to commemorate the 60th anniversary of The Queen's School," Principal Jennifer Williams shared during yesterday's press launch at the school.

On the heels of the introduction of the discuss throw event last year. The shot put will be contested for the first time in the under 20/Open category for both males and females and the Under-17 for both males and females.

"We had the discus last year, but we couldn't have the shot put, because they (Jamaica) were preparing for World Cup," co-chair and meet director, Olive McNaughton, said.

The event acts as a qualifying meet for Boys and Girls' Champs, so all the events are qualifiers including the 4x400m, which for the first time Inter-Secondary Schools Association will only accept the top 32 teams.

Entries have steadly increased over the years with more than 2,000 participants at each of the last three stagings. This has forced the organisers to put a limit on the number of entrants.

"We are restricting the number of heats per event to around 15," McNaughton said.

The closing date for entries is midnight January 20. The entry fees are as follows: teams with 20 or less athletes: $3,500; teams with more than 20 athletes: $6,000; co-ed teams: $7,000; individual entries:$400 per athlete.

Queen's past student, Carrie Russell, will be this year's honouree.
