New year! Now what? |
|||||
New Year's resolutions. Stop tek people man/woman, get a job, stop smoke weed, lose some weight, link back wid some ah mi friend dem and the list goes on! Dress ... check! Suit ... check! Hairstyle ... check! Haircut ... check! Ticket fi di New Year's Eve party ... check! Alright, mi finally inside di party ... mi naah lie, mi look good! Alright, who need fi si mi get fi si mi, although mi si dem people ya almost everywhere mi guh ... time fi tek some picture now. Eat some food ... beat some liquor ... jeezam, time fly quick eeh! 5,4,3,2,1 ... HAPPY NEW YEAR! Fireworks! Hugs and kisses, messages and phone calls tun up, suh mobile networks are clogged. Church services tun up, because many persons want to start the New year on a religious note and the heights of excitement over-night attempts to make changes are at an all-time high! Now what?! Now that we've crammed all our aspirations, dreams and wishes into one day, which is New Year's Day, what happens after? Yow, mi si people bruk dem pocket, di likkle wha dem have, jus fi show up and show out fi ring in di New year in fine style. Mi si people who nuh plan fi guh church again fi now mek sure dem ketch even di last 10 mins ah church service before di pastor seh happy new year! And the list of anxious activities is endless! But what does it all mean?! There's nothing at all wrong with viewing the new year as an opportunity for change, chance, upgrade or development as we all deserve a clean slate. But do you realise that waking up to a new day - whether it's March 29, 2013 or January 1, 2014 - is an opportunity for a new chance, page or change?! Many of us don't live to see January 1 or even February 2 but we are fixated on and obsessed with one day and the possible promise it may bring. Nuttn nuh wrong wid dressing up and going out, attending church fi get yu blessing or setting resolutions, but be real wid yuself. Being real with yourself should be the most important resolution on your list, as it governs all you do! Nuh bruk yu neck fi attend nuh event wha yu cyaa afford jus fi prove a point to people who mean nothing to yu life, as this year promises to be even more financially challenging! Parties naah guh nuh weh! They will always be there! Yu siddung inna church ah skip through Bible pages when you and I both know you only doing it fi mek an impression in one day. But the truth is you have nothing to prove to anyone but yourself, sinner or saint, if church is not where you truly want to be, be real with self and don't do it. Better yu guh pray or hold a meditation than to go to church for one day just because it's a new year! We set goals all the time, but the closer it gets to a new year, the anxiety to accomplish these goals are heightened ...why?! New Year's Day is literally another day of our lives, a day that we need to decide how best we can utilise this day to our full advantage. So as we enter a new year and as we glamourise and create excitement over it, remember most importantly that it is a new day! One that should be treated with the same excitement every day you wake up! Whether it's December 31, January 1 or June 17, treat each day as if it's the start of a New Year, because once you have life, that is your gift of opportunity to make resolutions, to make changes and to take chances!
