T&T baller dies in Hungary

BUDAPEST, Hungary (CMC):

Trinidad and Tobago footballer Akeem Adams, who suffered a stroke in Hungary earlier this year, has died, his uncle, Ivan Dick, has confirmed.

His club Ferencvaros also said Adams, 22, died yesterday after suffering a brain haemorrhage on Saturday.

He had been hospitalised since the heart attack and his left leg had been amputated to alleviate circulatory problems.

Adams, who played as a defender, passed away shortly after his mother Ancilla decided against taking the player off life support.

Adams, who joined Ferencvaros in August, played just a handful of games for Hungary's most popular team.

His last game was September 22, a 3-1 victory over Ujpest, Ferencvaros' traditional rivals.

World 400 metres hurdles champion, Jehue Gordon has captured Trinidad and Tobago's prestigious title of Sports Performance of the Year.

Gordon also won three other awards during the Spirit of Sports Awards (SOSA) Ceremony held here over the weekend.

He also grabbed the titles of Male Athlete of the Year, Consistent Performer of the Year and Breakthrough Performance of the Year.

"It is amazing to be here and to receive these gifts. You know it is hard for some of the athletes. I, for one, am hardly around my family six or seven months of the year," he said, pausing to wipe tears from his eyes.

Gordon also received the keys to a duplex from the Housing Development Corporation and a cheque for $800,000 for his golden run in Barcelona earlier this year.

Top youth swimmer Carter also received one award for Record-breaking Performance of the Year to add to his Junior Male Athlete of the Year award.

Packed festive BPL schedule

The Barclays Premier League wraps up its packed festive schedule with a full round of matches tomorrow with Arsenal (42 points) top of the standings but with a host of challengers tucked in just behind.

Arsenal, Manchester City (41) and Chelsea (40) have gone through the Christmas games unbeaten to lead the way in the top three, but Liverpool (36) have slipped out of the Champions League spots after successive losses against title rivals in a four-day span. Everton are fourth on 37.

Teams will be playing their fourth match in as little as 10 days in some cases, so managers will be seeking one last big performance from their players before the Premier League takes a break this weekend because of the FA Cup.
