Princess Popstar chasing history
Jimmie, Star Racing Writer

PHILIP FEANNY's unbeaten filly, PRINCESS POPSTAR, is on the cusp of history as she was yesterday listed among 13 entries for next Thursday's Supreme Ventures Limited (SVL) Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes at Caymanas Park.

The lightning-fast filly is hunting a fourth straight win in the $4.25m Boxing Day event to complete a sweep of the SVL Two-Year-Old Series. No horse has ever swept the challenging Two-Year-Old Series, which started in 2005 and carries a $1m bonus.

PRINCESS POPSTAR won the opening legs - The Cash Pot Only One For Me trophy and Pick-3 Super Challenge - but doesn't qualify for the bonus as she was not sold in the traditional Yearling Sale at Caymanas Park.

Though history is stacked against her, the flying filly, who posted stakes records in the opening legs of the series at 1200 and 1400 metres, respectively, should go to post as an overwhelming favourite to win the one-mile race with Winston Griffiths aboard.

14-time champion trainer

Griffiths has described her as "the best horse in Feanny's barn for the last decade". However, the 14-time champion trainer was a bit guarded yesterday when asked to comment on Griffiths' claim.

"The best two-year-old," he said.

"He needs to qualify that because some horses train on as three-year-olds and some don't," he warned.

PRINCESS POPSTAR is a half-sister to last year's Jamaica Derby and St Leger winner, TYPEWRITER, who also won last month's Superstakes.

Feanny yesterday said all was well with the filly who posted a sharp workout Monday morning, blowing American stablemate EL PONDEROSO off the track.

"EL PONDEROSO has not been working well for months, so it wasn't that she was great, EL PONDEROSO was bad," Feanny said, laying down PRINCESS POPSTSAR's 1:14.3 for six furlongs.

He, however, admitted she was comfortable throughout the gallop.

"In fact, she went too fast. I didn't want her to go that fast," he said, bad news for her 12 opponents, so far, including champion trainer Wayne DaCosta's trio of INSANE BOLT, MISS JUANITA and UNBREAKABKLE.
