Walsh wants Senior Cup revival

Recently elected Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) second vice-president, Courtney Walsh, says seeing the national two-day Senior Cup return to its former glory years will be one of his main areas of focus.

"A priority area for me is to get Senior Cup back where a lot of clubs are more involved," said Walsh.

"We are going to examine the schools, the colleges that are playing, and look at everything, as we want to leave no stones unturned," he added.

The Senior Cup, which since the late 1990s and early 2000s has lost its lustre, was generally referred to as a key breeding ground for West Indies cricketers.

However, because of one reason or another, including an influx of 50 - and 20-over cricket and competing interests for entertainment, the tournament has become a mere calendar event.

In fact, the much-vaunted tournament was not played this calendar year in what the outgoing JCA administration said was a strategic move.

The JCA, headed by Lyndel 'Muddy' Wright, said at the time that they wanted to move the tournament to coincide with the staging of next year's regional four-day tournament.

Walsh, in the meantime, who was elected on the ticket of new president Wilford 'Billy' Heaven, says he expected funding to be the biggest hurdle in the revamping of the tournament.

He, however, said he was confident that it was a hurdle that can be surpassed by the newly elected administration.

"Raising funds to raise the profile of the tournament is going to be the biggest challenge, and we know that," he said.

"But we will just have to go out there and get working."

The last Senior Cup featured 24 clubs and parish associations, excluding the University of the West Indies and University of Technology, who participated in national one-day and Twenty20 tournaments.
