Memory of Squingy at Magnum All-Star Face Off - Late Bass Odyssey great's acrobatics mentioned at Famous |

Mel Cooke, Star Writer
Very close to four years after his death, there was at least a passing mention of former Bass Odyssey sound system selector Kevin 'Squingy' Bennett during the Magnum All-Star $1,000,000 Face Off, currently on each Thursday night at the Famous Nightclub, Portmore, St Catherine. Squingy, the veteran of many a sound system battle in Jamaica, notably encounters with arch-rival Black Kat at the Death Before Dishonour series held in Montego Bay between 2001 and 2010 (the event was later renamed World Clash RESET in 2012), died on November 24, 2009. He died in the Tampa General Hospital, Florida, USA, from heart failure. At the recent RESET, clash in New York (USA) which Metro Media won, the trophy was dubbed The Squingy Cup in the late selector's honour. In their face off with Coppershot on Thursday, November 7, Redd Heat's selector stood on the console and invoked the name of the sound clash legend. He said, "Mi a tun Squingy now. Mi a tes' mi skills." Squingy was known for his acrobatic antics, standing on speaker boxes and even climbing into the stage rigging to deliver his speeches and then instruct the man at the console to drop the dub plate. There was one notable clash where Squingy's high-flying strategy went bad at a World Clash. In 2007, playing in the third round, he fell about 15 feet to the ground after clambering into the stage rigging. "When he died, a release from Bass Odyssey sound system said "Kevin was a proud, strong, loyal and dedicated member of our family, who bravely fought this obstacle to the final second and lived his life to the fullest in light of the surrounding circumstances." D'Angel and KipRich have also taken the elevated route during the current Magnum All-Star $1,000,000 Face Off, but no one has gone as high as Flava Unit's front man, Badda Bling. The man with the very animated presentation style started last week's clash against Bredda Hype seated above The STAR sign about 12 feet above the stage, leaping down with no sign of being hurt. |
