Injured prisoner beats up police guard

A robbery suspect accused of trying to grab a policeman's firearm from his holster and later asking the cop to kill him, was remanded in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday.

Charged with assault occasioning bodily harm and unlawful wounding is Kareem 'Anthrax' Campbell who returns to court on December 6. His attorney Ramona Nelson entered a not guilty plea.

Allegations are that on September 20, Campbell was under police guard at the Kingston Public Hospital after he was shot in an attempted robbery earlier in the day.

The prosecution claims that Campbell attacked the police constable, who was guarding him, when the cop removed him from the hospital bed to the wheelchair.

The court heard that while the cop was trying to handcuff Campbell to the wheelchair ,the accused grabbed on to policeman's gun and started punching him all over his body, while saying "gimme the gun".

remove his gun

The officer held on to his gun while Campbell reportedly punched him in the back and lower abdomen.

The policeman was able to remove his gun from his holster and held it in his right hand away from Campbell while the suspect continued to rain blows on his body.

The cop called for help repeatedly but no one responded. It is said several nurses witnessed what was happening but fled instead of trying to assist.

Meanwhile, the cop continued to fight off his attacker who held on to his neck and began choking him.

The Crown claims the incident lasted for 10 minutes before a district constable who was stationed on the same ward came to his colleague's assistance.

The DC entered the room and pulled his service pistol and pointed it at Campbell shouting "police". It was then that Campbell ended his assault. A police inspector later showed up.

Reports are that Campbell then repeatedly asked the policemen to kill him.
