Some of the best of Jamaica's amateur boxers will take on the best of the Cayman Islands at Treasure Beach in St. Elizabeth on Sunday, November 23 in the second leg of the 'Road to Rio' programme that looks to develop Jamaica's pool of boxing talent for the Olympic Games in Brazil in 2016. The eight-fight card that could feature top amateur boxers Michael Gardner, Kestner Davis and Jonathan Hanson and will most likely see four Caymanians facing four Jamaicans as well as four all-Jamaican bouts. The final decision on the bouts will be made by Jamaica Boxing Board's Kingsley Goodison, who heads the board's selection committee. a dozen children The fight card was announced during a press briefing at the offices of the Sports Development Foundation on Phoenix Avenue in St Andrew yesterday. It was also announced that the card will form part of an overall day of sports and entertainment headlined by the appearance of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams, who will be hosting a tennis clinic for about 12 children from the community and former heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis. The weekend of activities will also see patrons in attendance enjoying the music of Tarrus Riley in concert. Jason Henzel, one of the leaders in the sports tourism push and who runs the Treasure Beach Sports Park, said following on from the event that was held in April when Jamaican boxers faced a contingent of boxers from Canada, this coming event is promising to be as big. An estimated 3,000 patrons turned out for the event in April and an additional 1,500 watched live streaming of the event. The fight card and entertainment packages, he said, would also aid in showing off the sports park as a sports tourism venue. Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum, Ting, Breds Foundation, Jack Sprat Restaurant and the Sports Development Foundation are sponsoring the event.
