Walters defends crown |
|||||
Alberto Garza (right) is down for the count as Nicholas Walters celebrates in the background during the fourth round of a WBO featherweight title bout on Saturday night in Corpus Christi, Texas. - ap Spectacular and devastating were the two words being used in abundance last Saturday night, as fans described the fourth-round knockout victory scored by World Boxing Association (WBA) featherweight champion, Jamaica's Nicholas 'The Axeman' Walters, over Mexico's Alberto Garza at the American Bank Centre, in Corpus Christi, Texas. Coming off an 11-month break since winning the title in Jamaica last December 8, Walters overcame his first-round anxiety, to settle down and dismantle Garza's defence, after which he methodically set the stage for the dramatic knockout. It was one of the best victories he has scored, and his new promoter, Bob Arum's Top Rank, could not be happier. He is now 23-0, with 19 knockouts. Garza has dropped to 25-6-1. Another talking point after the fight was the fact that Walters called the round in which he would have knocked out Garza. In pre-fight interviews, Garza boasted that he would knock out Walters in eight rounds. The champion took this as an affront and declared immediately afterwards, " I am the champion and you are disrespecting me. I am now predicting that I will knock you out in four rounds." He kept his promise, to the delight of his manager Jacques Deschamps, who had also predicted a knockout victory.
