It took seven rounds of games and the return of former coach, Calvin Lewis, for five-time champions Portmore United to gain their first win of the 2013-2014 Red Stripe Premier League Campaign, after they yesterday clipped league leaders Montego Bay United 1-0 at the latter's home base, Wespow Park. The game's lone goal was scored by Steven Williams in the 85th minute. This was Lewis' first game back in charge of the team he led to their last league title in 2012, having resigned from his post as head coach of 11th-place Arnett Gardens last month. Other coaches might have labelled themselves as the 'chosen one' but Lewis was the 'happy one' after yesterday's triumph. "I have to commend the players, staff and the board for bringing me back," Lewis said. "I think it is one of the better games I have seen in the premier league so far. This performance today (Sunday), we need to replicate on a weekly basis." Despite the win, however, Portmore is still languishing at the foot of the 12-team standing, with five points, Montego Bay lead on goal difference with 13 points. Previous leaders Humble Lion missed the opportunity to regain the lead after playing to a 0-0 draw, with Tivoli Gardens at the Edward Seaga Complex. Humble Lion remain second on 13 points, with Tivoli also holding on to their position at sixth with 10 points, the same as three other teams in a congested mid table. The newly promoted Rivoli United heaped more pressure on Arnett Gardens, after condemning them to their third consecutive defeat, with a 2-1 triumph at the Spanish Town Prison Oval. Despite playing majority of the game with 10 players, following the sending off of Garfield Reid in the 35th minute, Rivoli achieved victory courtesy of goals from Christopher Hayles (16th pk) and Michael Blyden (26th). Arnett's goal was scored by Anthowe Dawkins in the 22nd minute. Rivoli have jumped five places to third place on 11 points, while the Jerome Waite-coached Arnett is 11th on five points. August Town's unbeaten tag was removed by Boys' Town after they were defeated 2-0 at the UWI Bowl, Mona. First-half goals by Shane Edwards (14th) and Andre Dawson (22nd) were enough to earn Boys' Town their second win of the season and see them move up three places to eighth on eight points. August Town remain on 10 points, but by virtue of their first defeat of the season fell two places to fifth. The match between 10th-place Sporting Central Academy (seven) and seventh-place Cavalier (10) was not played due to the poor state of the Juici Patties Park playing surface. Defending champions, Harbour View, who lie ninth on eight points, will tonight host Waterhouse in a 7 p.m. encounter at the Harbour View Mini-Stadium. |
