Edwin Allen High schoolgirl Marleena Eubanks and Kirk Brown, representing Seek Exercise Books, maintained their excellent form on the road circuit by dominating yesterday's Burger King Portmore 10K road race. They were the first female and male to finish the event. Eubanks won in 38 minutes 32 seconds, while Brown's winning time was 31 minutes 38 seconds. The event was the second and penultimate event in the Grand Prix series, Eubanks, who won the first staging, the Mobay 7K event a few weeks ago, got the better of the in form Danielle James of Mavis Bank Track Club, who finished second in 39:39. Vere Technical's Britney Dixon continued her good form this season by finishing third in 40:11. Eubanks, who is on target to win the Grand Prix series for the females, was very elated with victory. "I was very confident. I have been training hard for the past several weeks and this is good preparation for me leading up to Champs next year. I am also looking to remain unbeaten by winning the final event next month in Negril," said Eubanks. It was very competitive among the males as all the top middle-distance athletes were present, but it was Brown who held a narrow lead for the first eight kilometres with 2011 winner Shawn Pitter and Digicel Downtown Night Run winner Damion Bent staying close behind. However, Brown showed his class in the final two kilometres as he sprinted away from his rivals to win in 31 minutes 38 seconds. His training partner, Bent (31:48) and Pitter (32:07) finished second and third respectively. Brown who was second at the Mobay 7K event and who will miss the final event in Negril was happy with his winning effort. "I am much stronger this year and despite the early pressure from the field I knew I had the strength to move away from them and I did that," said Brown, who will be competing in Barbados the same day as the final event in Negril in December. In the High School Championship series, Bellefield High took the advantage of a Holmwood team, that turned up late, to finish on top as the best High School male team with 26 points, ahead of St Jago High on 66 and Mavis Bank with 83 points. It was very close among the females for the top two spots as Edwin Allen with 41 points, edged a rejuvenated Vere Technical team that finished second with 43 points as Rusea's finished third on 84 points. |
