GC Foster claim Greg Garrel Cup

RAYMOND GRAHAM, Star Writer

GC Foster College were crowned Greg Garrel Intercol Knock-out champions on Saturday at the Excelsior field after a comfortable 3-1 win over the University of West Indies.

Following their exit a year ago in the first round, to eventual champions, Mico University College, the Glenston Hutchinson-coached team from Spanish Town was determined to regain the title they won two years ago. The team as a result showed their intentions quite early. UWI, who surprised defending champions Mico 1-0 two days earlier in their semi-final at Mico, were under early pressure and found themselves a goal down after 17 minutes of play.

Five minutes later the UWI team got a glorious opportunity to draw level as they were awarded a penalty, but failed to convert. The team failed to recover from that early setback and despite some gallant efforts, failed to contain a better-prepared GC Foster, who could take the double adding to their league triumph a year ago.

Action in the league will get under way next Tuesday, where for the first time, teams will be placed in two groups and play home and return matches, with the top two from each group advancing to the semi-finals.
