At the recent launch of the 2013 Reggae Marathon, half marathon and 10K race director Alfred 'Franno' Francis was among those who lauded the support of the large number of sponsors the event has been able to attract and keep over the years. The marathon ranked among the best in the world over the past half a decade and set for December 7 this year, had attracted participants from 12 countries, and this year has seen a 40 per cent increase in the number of registrations. "Over the years, we have developed a good overseas following and expect to see a number of repeat visitors," Francis said, mentioning a group called Black Girls Run - the largest participating group of 144 runners as well as several others that will ensure that 2013 will be yet another successful year. None of it would be possible without the continued support of the almost 50 corporate sponsors among them Burger King, Red Stripe, Hi-Lyte, Digicel, GraceKennedy, PUMA, and Tuff Gong International being the most recognisable brands. One particular brand, he mentioned, was a hit among participants. "Our race enthusiasts cannot get enough Red Stripe during the event and we invite you to have a cold one here today, but I remind you, you must be 18 or older to partake," he said, as his audience burst into laughter. He went on to say that in the thousands of pictures taken at the 13-year-old event that attracts over 2,000 competitors from overseas, there is either someone with a coconut or a Red Stripe. His comments brought a smile to the face of Brand Manager Erin Mitchell. "We take part in the celebration aspect once they've completed the marathon," she said proudly. She added that it is an event that her company enjoys being involved with. "Obviously it's Jamaican, it's reggae music and we want to be a part of that celebration, so we will be there at the end for the party." She said being associated with the Reggae Marathon has a great impact on the beer brand. |
