Tranmere coach claims 'Pepe' was stupid... Veteran defender sent off for violent reaction during 400th game commemoration |

![]() Ian 'Pepe' Goodison - File What began as a joyous occasion for veteran defender Ian 'Pepe' Goodison turned into a nightmare after he was dismissed at the commemoration 400th appearance for English League One club Tranmere Rovers after striking fellow Jamaican international Kevin Lisbie of Leyton Orient. The 40-year-old defender was presented with a silver plate ahead of the game by Tranmere chairman Peter Johnson to commemorate his 400th appearance in a Rovers shirt at Bradford City earlier in the week. Goodison, however, received his marching orders in the 63rd minute for lashing out at Lisbie after a tackle on the forward led to the concession of a penalty. Although the score at Prenton Park was already 2-0 and the attempt on goal was subsequently missed, Goodison's manager Ronnie Moore was furious. "I thought we were a little bit unlucky to be 2-0 down at that stage and then Ian Goodison does something stupid that let everyone down," Moore told UK online publication Wirralnews (http://www.wirralnews.co.uk). "You can't stand up (after a tackle) and slap someone in the face." Leyton Orient went on to win the game 4-0. "It's been on the cards in the last couple of weeks. He got away with it at Bradford, where I don't think he deserved to be sent off but was involved. Referees are not stupid. They are going to look for it." three-match ban Goodison could face a three-match ban if referee Richard Clark reports the incident as violent conduct. The 40-year-old defender also faces a club fine. "He will be done for it. He's the captain and let everyone down," Moore said. "To do that when he's just been presented with the award from the chairman is disappointing." The veteran Reggae Boy has often been on the receiving end of high recommendations from both manager and club for both his longevity and outstanding play. |
