Jamaica's middleweight champion Jonathan Hanson yesterday lost his first-round fight against Soltan Migitinov of Azerbaijan at the World Boxing Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Hanson, who lost his last fight in Chile, was hoping to rebound with a victory in his bid for a spot on Jamaica's team to the Olympics in 2016. Those hopes dimmed when the referee stopped the fight in the second round. On Wednesday, promising young welterweight boxer Kestna Davis lost his first-round fight, bringing an end to his campaign. Davis, who fights out of the Bruising Gym in Stony Hill, St Andrew, and Hanson are the two Jamaican boxers who participated in an International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) training camp recently, and was among those selected to compete at the championships. Davis, who fought in the 69kg category, lost on points 30 to 27 to Nigeria's Korede Adenjii. The youngster with the fast hands, and who carried the Jamaican flag at Wednesday's colourful opening ceremony, lost each round 10-9 to his opponent. Carl Grant, Davis' coach at Bruising Gym, said the young boxer got off to a slow start and never recovered against the Nigerian. "The slow start cost him the fight," Grant said, adding that he hopes the boxer learns from the experience. Hanson and Davis were Jamaica's representatives at the AIBA camp that ran from September 28 to October 10. They were invited to the camp as part of the association's development programme for boxers worldwide. During the camp, they received specialised training, and were among the best boxers selected to compete at the championships that began on October 11 and ends on the 27th. AIBA is covering expenses for the boxers who participated in the camp and those who advance to the championships. |
