KEVIN BROWN has his sights set squarely on a gold medal at the October 29 - November 3 International Sport Kickboxing Association's World Championships in North Cyprus. The 22-year-old University of Technology student is confident that his improvement, since drafted to Jamaica's combined martial arts team, will continue in Europe after a gold medal-winning performance at July's US Open. "Having been called to the team in January, I have improved steadily. I won my first international match title in Cuba, in March, as part of the combined team, and won two medals at the US Open," the Rising Sun Academy fighter pointed out. Brown won his spot on the 2013 combined team with points earned on the local tournament scene last year. He won bronze medals at the First Jamaica Zendo and Sidekicks Taekwondo opens as well as silver at the Seido Open. His big break came when he won the lightweight division at November's McKay Security Black Belt Invitational. A call to the combined team followed and Brown responded by winning his team bout in Cuba. His improvement was obvious after that. "I beat Nicholas Dussard in a points match at the Seido Open and that told me I was ready," he said. Brown franked his form by striking gold at the US Open where he had previously won two bronze medals in 2011. "I won a clash-sparring gold and got a bronze in continuous sparring," he pointed out. Cyprus, he said, will be major test as he takes on Europe for the first time. "I am elated to have been given this opportunity to compete against the best in the world at the ISKA Champs. "I am mindful that it is going to be tough. No doubt, my inexperience will make things harder but my preparation will be enough to secure a medal. We've been training from January for this competition and I am ready to go," he said. |
