SHELDON WILLIAMS, STAFF REPORTER
A grade 11 male student of Tarrant High School in St Andrew was treated at hospital on Wednesday after he was reportedly stabbed by another male student in grade 10. It is unclear what led to the stabbing, but the injured student was taken to the University Hospital of the West Indies where he received stitches and was sent home. Interim principal Esther Tyson told our news team that the incident took place around midday, but further details would be available soon. "He received a cut on his mouth and one on his forehead but they were not life-threatening, thank God," she disclosed. She said the injured student would be interviewed by the school administration to find out what led to his injury. Meanwhile, Byron Buckley, director of corporate communications at the education ministry said "The dean of discipline and other teachers rounded up the young men of grade 10 who were involved in the incident and eventually located the knife that allegedly had been used by the student." "The police were called and they took the students who had been involved to the police station," he added. THE Weekend STAR was unable to get a comment from Senior Superintendent Fitz Bailey who heads the St Andrew Central Police Division where the school is located. This is at least the third stabbing incident in schools since the start of the year. On June 19, 13-year-old Jamellia Dawkins of the Anchovy High School in St James died after she was stabbed by another student on the school compound. Reports from the Anchovy police were that about 11:45 a.m., Dawkins and another student had a dispute during which she was stabbed. She was taken to the hospital where she died. On April 11, 16-year-old student Nario Coleman, otherwise called 'Two Face', of Balcombe Drive, Kingston 11, was stabbed to death and another taken into police custody after they were involved in a dispute at Penwood High School. |
