Prince Williams acquitted of murder

A man who told the 12-member jury that he used his attacker's weapon to defend himself left the Home Circuit Court a free man.

Prince Williams, 21, telephone technician of Rollington Town, Kingston, was acquitted of the murder of 32-year-old Kivete Dobbs, of Rollington Town.

The Crown led evidence that about 11 p.m. on July 7, 2010, Williams used a knife to cut Dobbs' throat. Williams then ran to the Rollington Town Police Station and handed over the knife.

Williams, in his defence , told the court that he was walking with his girlfriend and her sister when Dobbs and her relatives attacked him. He said one of the relatives was armed with an ice pick and Dobbs had a knife. They accused him of things he said sometime ago and an argument developed.

He said the relatives attacked him and during the struggle, Dobbs' knife fell and he picked it up. He said he had no choice but use Dobbs' knife to defend himself.

Attorney-at-law Peter Champagnie, who represented Williams, in his address to the jury asked them to free Williams, and accept his defence that he was under attack.

The jury retired for less than an hour and returned a unanimous verdict that Williams was not guilty.

Justice Glen Brown presided at the trial.
