University student remanded
A university student who was nabbed following a report from a US resident that he scammed her money after pretending she had won a contest, was further remanded in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's court on Friday.

Charged with attempting to obtain money by false pretence, obtaining money by false pretence and conspiracy to defraud is 22-year-old Cameron Carlyle from Kingston 20.

The court heard that sometime last month, Carlyle contacted the complainant by telephone and then collected $75,000 by delusion, allegedly telling her that she won a prize which will require cash payments before she received it.

Allegations are that the complainant sent money to the accused through a remittance company and he collected it.

The court heard that on another attempt to collect more money from the complainant, the agency became suspicious and contacted the sender and they were notified that the collector had told her that she had won a contest. The police were called in and Carlyle was arrested.

Carlyle pleaded not guilty arguing that he did not contact the complainant and that he was sent to collect the money, and was told to use a portion of the cash to pay his school fee.

A fingerprint order was made and he returns to court on October 28.
