Man fined $25k for stealing rum

A 31-year-old man who pleaded guilty to stealing eight bottles of rum was fined $25,000 when he appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Damian Rose was before the courts on a charge of simple larceny.

It is alleged that Rose stole eight quart bottles of J. Wray & Nephew white rum from the complainant.

Rose, who admitted to the allegations, told the court that it was a misunderstanding.

"Your honour, it was a misunderstanding, I got caught in a bad situation, your honour, mi really sorry me's not a man of many words," an apologetic Rose told the judge.

When asked by Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey why he thinks he should not go to jail, Rose pleaded, "I am asking for sympathy, I really am sorry bout it, anuh really tief mi tief dem, but a dance did a keep and dem lef ova and mi tek dem."

A fingerprint order was made and Rose was fined $25,000 or six months in prison.
