Cop charged with ex-girlfriend's murder denied bail

Gareth Davis Sr, STAR Writer

Portland:

The policeman charged with the murder of his ex-girlfriend yesterday had his bail application dismissed when he appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate (RM) Marjorie Moisten in the Port Antonio Resident Magistrate's Court.

The application was dismissed after the accused man's attorney Christopher Townsend failed to convince the RM why he should be given bail.

Lincoln McCoy, a detective constable attached to the Buff Bay police in Portland, who allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend on August 14 near the Errol Flynn Marina in Port Antonio, is charged with murder.

He is to remain behind bars until January 15 when his three-day murder trial begins.

Suicidal

Moisten, last Friday, reserved her decision as to whether or not McCoy is to be granted bail. She said after careful consideration, she believed the policeman posed a serious danger to himself, as he is considered to be suicidal.

Moisten's decision comes against the background of pleas from Townsend, who had earlier indicated that his client was remorseful and was not a flight risk.

Last Friday, a psychiatric evaluation report was presented in court among other things that the policeman was mentally unstable.

The policeman allegedly shot his girlfriend, Jessica King, three times in front of several witnesses near the entrance to the Errol Flynn Marina in Port Antonio on the afternoon of August 14, before turning the gun on himself.

It is reported that the two were in a long-standing common-law relationship, which later turned sour.
