St Catherine rally to beat Denham Town

Marc Stamp, Star Writer

St Catherine High rallied for a come-from-behind 2-1 victory against Denham Town High in the their Group C encounter in the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/LIME Manning Cup football competition at the Edward Seaga Sports Complex yesterday.

The win pushed St Catherine to 12 points, one off second-place Denham Town. Wolmer's Boys lead the group on 16 points after six games.

After a swift counter-attack, Denham Town took the lead and maintained to the half-way stage, after Rodico Wellington finished off a combination of passes by firing past Rojay Gonzales in the 37th minute.

In the second half, St Catherine picked up the tempo and took over the game from the home side. Akeem Tomlinson, Ricardo McNeish and Chavaughn Walters took the fight to Denham Town.

St Catherine pulled level from the penalty spot when substitute Dante Smith was fouled inside the area and Walters stepped up and placed the ball to the far corner, beating Denham Town's goalkeeper Brian Bennett in the 69th minute.

Three minutes later Walters scrambled home from close range, following a defensive error.

"It was a very important win for us today (yesterday)," coach of St Catherine Anthony Patrick said.

"We needed the three points to stay in contention because if we had lost the game it would be difficult for us to advance to the next round," he explained.

"The team was a bit timid in the first half, so at the half-time break I took them into the changing room and told them to calm down and play some football," Patrick said.
