Bigman in Town romps T&T Derby

BIGMAN IN TOWN. - file

Jamaican-bred three -year-old colt, BIGMAN IN TOWN, running at odds of 3/5, romped the Trinidad and Tobago Derby at the Santa Rosa race track yesterday.

Ridden by the United States-based jockey Javier Castellano, the Cowtown Cat - My Morning Prayer colt, bred locally by Ham Stables, took up the running 300 metres out and won going away by almost five lengths from second favourite WAR OF WORDS (Wilmer Galviz) and 5-1 shot PRINCE ZESHAN (Rajiv Maragh). Two other Jamaican-bred horses, PERFECT DAY with Shane Ellis aboard and FIRELIGHT (Allen Maragh) were seventh and eighth respectively in the 12-horse field.

Trained by Gary Subratie and owned by Trinidadian Baskaran Bassawh, BIGMAN IN TOWN covered the 2000 metres derby distance in 2:07.2. The chestnut colt was the fifth Jamaican-bred horse to triumph in Trinidad and Tobago's premier Classic. The other four are MR LOVER LOVER (1997), TERREMOTO (1998), PRIDE 'N GLORY (2000) and BRUCEONTHELOOSE (2009).

Top local jockey Ellis had one winner on the card. He took the eighth race aboard the American-bred five-year-old SACRED TRUST. The 14-1 shot covered the 1300 metres trip in 1:19.4.
