Kingston College (KC) edged Spanish Town High 1-0 in Group F of the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/LIME Manning Cup football competition preliminary round at KC's North Street playfield yesterday.

The Donovan Hayles-coached team bounced back from a 1-0 loss to Greater Portmore away on Saturday with a hard-fought win over group leaders Spanish Town. The win pushed KC to six points from three games, while Spanish Town are on seven points from four games.

KC could improve on their points tally as they have a rescheduled encounter against Eltham at KC. The September 10 match was not played because the officials failed to show.

At KC, the home team dominated the first half with some good combinations from captain Allan Morgan, Chevaun Blake, Rasheed Dawkins and Kavane Jones. They went ahead when Jones produced a neat finish past goalkeeper Sean-Paul Desouza in the 21st minute, after a cross by Blake.

KC missed a number of chances to add to the lead as they were let down by poor finishing.

Spanish Town improved their performance in the second half while KC went into a defensive mode. Led by national Under-17 player and school captain Nathaniel 'Papa Doc' Leslie, Courtney Lee and Kemar Sharpe Spanish Town made several raids on the KC goal, but the North Street-based school defended the one-goal advantage to the end.

"I think we played well in the first half. We moved the ball around much better," KC's coach Hayles said. "Coming off a loss on Saturday, we scored early today but we were a bit cagey in the second half," he noted.

"I don't think we created any chance in the second half. We need to move the ball around much better. Hope this win will be a confidence booster for the team moving forward," the KC coach reasoned.

Meanwhile, coach of Spanish Town High, Anthony Thompson said his team played poorly during the first half things got better in the second half.

"I am very disappointed as the team just did not play in the first half. I know we will bounce back. We had a hard game on Saturday (against Eltham) and I don't know if that was the reason for the poor performance in the first half," Thompson said.

In another Group E game, Penwood and Greater Portmore High battled to a 1-1 draw at Cling Cling Oval.
