Constables accused of soliciting money get trial date |

|
Two police constables accused of misusing their power while off duty to solicit an undetermined sum of money from a Chinese merchant will go to trial on November 14. Charged with breach of the Corruption Prevention Act are Greg Drummond and Dean Thomas, who both pleaded not guilty in the Corporate Area Resident Magis-trate's Court yesterday. The cops were offered bail in the sum of $200,000 each with surety. A stop order was also put in place, and they are to surrender their travel documents. A fingerprint order was also made. illegal items The Crown is alleging that on the day in question, both constables acted on information and went to the business place of the complainant. They told her they were acting on intelligence she might have illegal items in stock. They reportedly requested a search of her vehicle but she refused as they were not in uniform and failed to produce satisfactory identification. It is further alleged that the lawmen asked the complainant for money to turn a blind eye. An undetermined sum of money was reportedly given to the men. Following investigations, they were charged. The cops repeatedly denied allegations of misconduct and maintained they were carrying out their lawful duties within the ambit of their powers. They also denied receiving any money. |
