Western Bureau: After two wins on the trot to lead Zone H of the ISSA/LIME daCosta Cup schoolboy football competition, new head coach at Clarendon College Jackie Walters believes he has the right ingredients for a shot at the title. Clarendon will host Edwin Allen tomorrow. "The players and indeed all of us are confident of another victory, especially that we will be playing at home," said Walters, who left current title-holders Glenmuir High School after guiding them to a third championship last year. Known as a no-nonsense coach, Walters is expected to groom his players at Clarendon College into a well-oiled machine and could make a run for the title, which would be their first since winning it back in 1998, their last of five titles. And with players such as Andrew Gutzmore and winger Zhane Reid, among others, Clarendon College could be more than a handful for the other schools. They lead Zone H on maximum six points heading into tomorrow's round of matches, and having scored five goals are showing the quality that Walters is famous for. They are followed in the standings by Claude McKay and Edwin Allen, both having drawn one and losing the other, have one point each. Thompson Town High School and Lennon are yet without a point. "Like everyone else in the daCosta Cup, we are in this competition to win it," reasoned Walters. "We have a good set of players and they are very confident of their abilities so, yes, we are hoping to go all the way." Their 3-1 win over Claude McKay on Saturday was just a measure of how decent a side they have and it could get better as the competition rolls along and the players become settled. Walters will be seeking a unique feat, leaving one school with a championship and end up winning with his new school in the first year as head coach. But while that feat is some way off, Walters and his players will be taking it one game at a time. Lennon High will host Claude McKay High in the other Zone H match. |
