Alleged machete attack on neighbour lands woman in court

Christopher Thomas, STAR Writer

WESTERN BUREAU:

A St James woman, who reportedly attacked one of her neighbours with a knife and a machete, had her case rescheduled for December 3 when she appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Thirty-two-year-old Anita Fletcher, of a Spring Mount address, is charged with attempted murder, assault at common-law, wounding with intent, and possession of an offensive weapon.

It is alleged that on January 29, 2013, Fletcher and the complainant were involved in a fight during which Fletcher went for a machete and threatened to kill the complainant. However, residents intervened and disarmed Fletcher, following which she armed herself with a knife and attempted to attack the complainant again.

Arrested and charged

The police were summoned, and both women were taken to the Spring Mount Police Station. On the way, Fletcher pulled out another knife and attacked the complainant in full view of the arresting officer, who managed to restrain her. She was subsequently arrested and charged.

Yesterday, clerk of the court Sheryl Robinson told Resident Magistrate Wilson Smith that Fletcher's case was ready for preliminary examination.

"The matter can be placed on the prelim list. All the matters (charges) on the list can be reduced after reading the file as there is no permanent injury suffered by the other party," said Robinson.

"The medical certificate is on file and there was to be a further medical examination, but she never went back," Robinson said regarding the complainant, who was not at court.

"The defendant's bail is extended, the investigating officer is bound over, and a subpoena is issued for the witnesses with a view to reducing the charges," said Smith as he set the case for December 3.
