The 2013-14 Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) is all set to kick off on Sunday with a change to last season's format. This season's champions will be decided following a four-team play-off after three rounds are completed. At the completion of the third round, the top-four teams on points will be involved in knockout semi-finals to be played on a home-and-away basis. The semi-final winners, on aggregate, will advance to the grand final, where the winners will be crowned champions. The team with the most points following the completion of the third round will also receive a trophy and cash incentive. "After a meeting of the Jamaica Football Federation board of directors last Sunday, they ratified the play-off round with the top-four teams," Andrew Price, who was appointed general manager of the Premier League Clubs Association (PLCA) last May, toldStar Sports when contacted yesterday. Harbour View FC won last season's RSPL under the points system by accumulating most points at the end of four rounds. "We decided to add the play-off system, which should add more excitement for fans," Price added. He also indicated that this season's champions could walk away with more than the $2.5 million Harbour View pocketed last season. "We want to give the champions some more money," Price revealed. The competition kicks off on Sunday with six games. The full first-day fixture is: Waterhouse vs Boys' Town at Drewsland Stadium, starting at 5 p.m.; Cavalier SC vs Portmore United FC at Stadium East, beginning at 4:30 p.m.; Humble Lion vs Arnett Gardens FC at Effortville Community Centre, Clarendon, at 3:30 p.m.; August Town FC vs Rivoli United FC at the University of the West Indies, Mona Bowl, at 3:30 p.m.; Tivoli Gardens FC vs Montego Bay United FC at the Edward Seaga Stadium, starting at 3:30 p.m.; and Sporting Central Academy vs Harbour View FC at Juici Patties Park in Clarendon, at 3:30 p.m. |
