Father accused of burning baby's clothes ordered to pay

There was drama in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Monday after a man, who is accused of destroying his baby's clothes and assaulting his pregnant babymother, was offered bail.

Eugene Griffiths, a jerked chicken vendor, pleaded not guilty to the charges of malicious destruction of property and assault occasioning bodily harm.

According to reports, Griffiths allegedly used fire to damage a quantity of baby clothes, a fan and an electric iron. He also reportedly assaulted the complainant who is also pregnant with his child.

But Griffiths refuted the claims stating that he did not burn the clothes.

"Your honour, mi neva burn dem, is mi baby clothes dem and is my yute she pregnant wid, mi neva do it your honour!" he exclaimed.

The complainant told the court, however, "your honour, mi did live wid him, but mi did affi leave because of his family, is one a mi neighbour help mi move out some of di tings dem. when the tings dem burn up, he came to me and seh 'unuh lucky unuh save nuttin.'"

Griffiths was ordered to pay the complainant $30,000 to repurchase the unborn child's clothes.

However he did not have the money available but claimed that his mother would be willing to assist him. she was called to the stand, but quickly stated "No, your honour!" and walked away.

Griffiths was sternly warned by Resident Magistrate Shelly Williams, to "do not interfere with the complainant,"

Griffiths responded, "I'm willing to pay back for the baby clothes because it's my youth, but I did not burn them."

He was offered bail at $40,000 with one or two sureties and is to return to court for mention on September 17.
