Schafer clings to Reggae Boyz hope |

![]() Jamaica's head coach, German Winfried Schaefer. Reggae Boyz coach, Winfried 'Winnie' Schafer, has refused to call it curtains on the country's 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign despite the team languishing at the foot of the CONCACAF Hexagonal standing with a mere two rounds of games to be played. An injury-time goal by Jermaine 'Tuffy' Anderson secured the fourth point of a disappointing campaign for the Reggae Boyz at the National Stadium on Tuesday night, as they ended 1-1 with Costa Rica. The point did not do much to improve the team's position, as they will need to win their remaining two games against USA (16) and Honduras (11) while hoping that Panama (eight) and Mexico (eight) fail to win any of their remaining two matches. Costa Rica (15) and USA have already booked their tickets for Rio. "Everything is still open, Mexico have eight points and we have four points," Schafer reasoned. "Now a draw is not enough, we have to win our next match in the United States." The United States match will be on October 11, and Schafer is confident that with him now more familiar with his players they will be able to secure victory. "I am sure we can win against the United States," Schafer said. "Now, I know my players, which player will give more than 100 per cent. Which player will give everything for my team, and that is why I know that we can change the situation." Schaefer, overseeing his second game in charge of the team, is also looking forward to getting back some keys players for the crucial encounter including Demar Phillips, as he desperately wants a genuine left footer on that flank. "Austin will come back and Ricketts, we have four weeks time (before the USA game), and now I know all my players," Schafer shared. "Phillips is injured, and I hope he comes back as he is one of the best players I hear on the left side." - R.J. |
