The family and friends of Wayne 'Captain Barkey' Hamilton will be hosting an event called "Port Fest: Tribute to Captain Barkey" in honour of his memory on October 12 at Waves Beach in Portmore, St Catherine.

"We had to do something to mark the passing of Captain Barkey; he contributed a lot to the business. As a soldier, he used to jump outta jeep and mash up dance and him and him soldier jump back inna jeep and drive off. He got his first hit with Sound Of The Gun, changed his name from General Barkey to Captain Barkey, and then his career took off. Mi have to keep the event in respect to his contribution and a tribute to his time in music," Otis 'Beego Blood' Ellis, brother of the late deejay, said.

Artistes who have been confirmed for the tribute concert include Jah Bouks, Wickerman, Lady G, Terror Fabulous, Pliers, Villa Dutch, Beego Blood, and Chuck Fenda. The emcee for the event will be Beetle Bailey.

The Flava Unit sound system, Metro Media, Hotta Ball, Marlon Fresh and Scratchy B from Cash Money sound system have also confirmed.

"More artistes will be confirmed. I am approaching Beenie Man, Romain Virgo, Macka Diamond and Josie Wales as well. Nuff other selectors say dem waan pass through. A lot of artiste friends want to come and pay their respect to Barkey, even Jimmy Metro says he wants to be at the event, so I had to do this for Barkey," Beego Blood continued.

On October 13 last year, Captain Barkey was shot dead in the parking lot of a motel in Bronx, New York.

Barkey was killed along with 38-year-old Tracy Bennett, as they were about to leave a motel in her white Toyota Camry. Joseph Kernizan, the Haitian national suspected to have killed them, committed suicide in a North Miami apartment on October 17 as US marshalls moved in to take him into custody.

Captain Barkey was a veteran of the sound system circuit. He started deejaying with two Spanish Town sound systems - Stereo One and People's Choice.

"All proceeds from the show will go towards a trust fund set up for Barkey's babymothers and kids," Beggo said, adding that Rebel Soulz is the major sponsor for the event.

He had a few minor hits before topping local charts 16 years ago with Go Go Wine, after which he scored with Bun Fi Bun. He eventually partnered with fellow deejay Wickerman (real name David Taylor) and the duo put out a number of hits, recording for giant dancehall producers King Jammys and Steelie and Clevie.
