October 4 is the sentencing date set in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday for the employee accused of extorting $300,000 from his co-worker to prevent the murder of her brother.
Douglas Kiefer pleaded guilty to extortion and conspiracy before a social enquiry report was ordered by Resident Magistrate (RM) Lorna Shelly Williams. He was then remanded in custody. The RM also ordered the money, $210,000, that was used in the sting operation to nab Kiefer to be returned to the complainant. On his previous court appearance, the accused said he was forced to extort the money from the complainant by three gunmen, who approached him while he walked on Red Hills Road, and ordered him to follow their instructions. He said a black vehicle drove up to him and three masked men exited the vehicle and told him they wanted the complainant's brother dead, and they needed his participation. He said he told them he could not help as he only had a work relationship with the man but they threatened him and gave him a SIM card, so they could keep in contact with him. After much thought, he said he complied to save his life, his co-worker's life, and her brother's life. The complainant told the court that before she found out the identity of the extortionist, she became fearful because he told her he knew where her child goes to school, and he knows where her family business is. The defendant was eventually arrested and charged after police investigation. |
