Cunningham hopes to beat injury

Jamaica's top-rated female fighter, Sheckema Cunningham, has suffered a setback in preparation for October's International Taekwon-Do Federation World Championship in Benidorm, Spain.>

Cunningham sustained an injury at work which has slowed her training for the October 23-27 event where she will attempt to improve on the bronze medal won in New Zealand in 2011.

The microweight fighter from Future Leaders Karate is on a mission to nail an unprecedented grand slam of world titles after securing a clash-sparring gold medal at last month's International Sports Karate Association (ISKA) US Open.

Cunningham's coach, Jason McKay, said though the setback has disrupted her training somewhat, he expects the 28-year-old to rebound and hit peak fitness soon.

"It's a concern but we are confident Sheckema will get over it and resume full training," he told STAR Sports.

After October's World Champs, Cunning-ham will set sights on the International Sport Kickboxing Association's World Champion-ship in Cyprus.

No Jamaican fighter has ever completed a hat-trick of 'grand slam' medals on the international circuit. Cunningham has started with two medals, gold included.

"The hardest one is the ITF World Championship," she told STAR Sports.

"If you're not on top of your game a World Championship medal will only be a dream. That's the medal everybody wants to get," she added.

Cunningham became the first Jamaican female to medal at the ITF World Champion-ships when she and male lightweight Alrick Wanliss landed bronze medals in New Zealand 2011.

"It's very competitive at the World Championships. That's where you find the best of the best. Everybody wants to win," she pointed out.
