Inmate gets 10 days for $300

A man who was found in possession of $300 inside a police lock-up was given 10 days' imprisonment in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

He is Kirk Absalom, charged with conveying contraband.

The court heard that, on the day of the incident, Absalom was asked by the police if he had anything on him to declare. He told the officer no. A search of his person revealed that he had $300 on his person.

Senior Resident Magistrate Georgiana Fraser asked how he got the money.

And Absalom responded that a woman had given it to him to pass on to her son. She asked him where was the woman's son. Absalom said he was out in the streets.

This explanation did not sit well with the magistrate who ordered that he serve 10 days imprisonment.

Absalom has another matter before the court in which he is charged for assaulting his girlfriend.

He is to return to court on September 17.
