King could reign again |

Ryon Jones, Staff Reporter New Jamaican head coach, Winfried Schafer, did not move to quell rumours that troubled former Reggae Boy striker, Marlon King, is poised to come out of retirement and will once again don the country's colours for the pivotal CONCACAF Hexagonal World Cup Qualifier against Panama on September 6. Schafer, who was appointed last month, spoke openly about influential central defender Nyron Nosworthy, who was injured during the March 22 encounter against Panama at the National Stadium and has not featured since. "I met his club and I spoke to the owner of the club and his coach, and he (Nosworthy) is injured and cannot play," Schafer offered without reservation. "He can't play in the next two matches, but maybe he can play in the third match." However, when quizzed about the return of the Birmingham City striker, King, Schafer kept his cards closer to his chest. "When Captain Burrell comes in, I will give the list (of players) to you," he said. The 33-year-old King, who has scored 12 goals in 21 games for Jamaica, retired from international football in November of last year. King does not have such an impressive record with the law, however, and is currently out on bail after being arrested last month in connection with a hit-and-run incident, which left a man with a head injury. Many persons in the local football fraternity, however, believe he is the answer to the Boyz scoring woes, with the team having managed only two goals in their last six World Cup Qualifiers. The dismal showing has left the nation's 2014 World Cup dream hanging by a thread as the Boyz are languishing at the base of the six-team group on two points, with four games to be played. The group is led by the United States (13 points), followed by Costa Rica (11), Mexico (eight), Honduras (seven), and Panama (six). Schafer did make it clear, however, that there would be some new players in the 23-man squad for the Panama encounter, which will be followed four days later by a match against Costa Rica. "There will be new players, it is clear," Schafer said. "That is why I went to England, but I can't tell you the players on the list. We have to wait until when Burrell comes back." Schafer is of the opinion that what has derailed the 'Road to Rio' campaign, following the encouraging start that saw the Boyz earn their first-ever point away to Mexico, is complacency. "I believe the biggest problem was the first match - 0-0 against Mexico - and everybody believed the next match was going to be easy against Panama. All matches are very difficult." |
