The matter involving a 52-year-old accountant who is accused of being a fake attorney was set for trial when it was mentioned in the Corporate Area Resident Magis-trate's Court yesterday. Karl Bowen is charged with several counts of obtaining money by false pretence and acting as an attorney without being duly qualified. Bowen is accused of collecting $260,000 from a man to represent him as an attorney. He returns to court on October 3 It is alleged that on July 15, 1995, the complainant accidentally stepped on a Jamaica Public Service power line, which caused severe burns to his body. It is reported that the complainant was hospitalised for a few months, and it is alleged that in 2009, the complainant was awarded $117, 000 with the help of an attorney as the lawyer did a claim for him from an insurance company. Further allegations are that in 2011, the complainant met Bowen through a friend who told him he had been unfairly compensated and that he was in a position to claim $25 million. Bowen allegedly accepted an initial payment of $25,000 from the complainant before collecting several other sums amounting to $260,000. The complainant was allegedly told by Bowen that he would get $12 million. However, in 2013, the complainant was advised by an attorney in Spanish Town, St Catherine, to report Bowen to the Jamaica Bar Association. The court heard that it was revealed that Bowen was not a licensed attorney and a report was made to the police. |
