Martin Davis is back from his three-and-a-half-year stint at Spanish football club Valencia FC's academy and is hoping to use the experience to help St George's College to a third consecutive hold on the Manning Cup. Davis got his first taste of competitive action with the Manning Cup unit during the third annual St George's College Pre-Season Football tournament held over the weekend at Winchester Park. The 16-year-old was deployed in central midfield, as the Neville Bell-coached St George's defeated Calabar 2-1 on Saturday before clipping Glenmuir 1-0 on Sunday to top the four-team competition with a maximum six points. St George's, who were winning the competition for the first time, pocketed $75,000, while Clarendon College earned $50,000 after finishing as runners-up. They drew 1-1 with Glenmuir on Saturday then blanked Calabar 4-0 on Sunday. Davis, who played under-14 with St George's before leaving the island for Spain, is not satisfied with the preseason trophy win but is looking towards bigger things. "I have always wanted to win with St George's and I think this will be the year," Davis said. "I have a lot of confidence in my team. I think it is a very positive group, everybody is with each other. There is a lot of chemistry and I believe that we can take it this year again." Despite having predominately played on the wing while at Valencia, the national under-15 player is comfortable playing anywhere on the park that the coach sees fit. "Anywhere the coach puts me I will do my best," Davis expressed. "I usually play on the wing, but if he (coach) sees that playing in the middle is better for the team then that's my position and I will do my best. "Being around a professional environment has helped me to mature as a footballer and I have learned a different style; that passing style that Spain has. I am just hoping to bring it here to help my team the best way possible as always." Davis is, however, awaiting his grades from studies done in Spain to see if he will be able to matriculate to sixth form.
