Businessman fined for bribing cop

A St Catherine-based businessman who attempted to bribe a policeman on Independence Day was fined $30,000 or six months hard labour when he appeared in The Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

He is Yuzhong Li, 52-year-old businessman of Spanish Town, St Catherine .

When the matter came up in The Corporate Area Criminal Court Thursday, Li pleaded guilty to breaches of the Corruption Prevention Act.

Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey ordered that he be fined or imprisoned for the offence.

He was told that the offence is one where persons are usually sent to prison and that he should take heed.

The court heard that the accused was spotted driving a Toyota Prado Sports Utility Vehicle along Washington Boulevard in St Andrew.

He was stopped by personnel from the Traffic Headquarters and told that he was speeding and that he would be ticketed for it.

The accused gave $2,000 to Detective Corporal Kirk Roache and told him to, ''have a drink and nuh bada give no ticket''

He was subsequently charged with attempting to bribe a constable. .
