MOSCOW, Russia: Jamaican superstar Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce says she is bubbling with confidence after her commanding victory in the 100m, on Monday night, as she looks to underline her status as the world's best female sprinter, with the start of her 200m campaign today at the IAAF World Championships in Athletics. Also today, Kimberly Williams and Nickiesha Wilson will be looking to add to Jamaica's three-medal tally (2 gold, 1 bronze), so far, at these championships, being staged at the Luzhniki Stadium, when they line up in the women's triple jump and 400m hurdles final, respectively, later today. extra confidence On Monday, Fraser-Pryce had no company to the line, winning her second 100m world title in 10.71 seconds, a time and margin that has the MVP standout champing at the bit, ahead of today's half-lap heats and semi-finals. "Well, if anything, that win certainly gave me some extra confidence," said Fraser-Pryce. Despite finishing second and third, respectively, in her last two 200m races in Birmingham and Monaco, Fraser-Pryce enters the field as the fastest woman over the distance this year with a time of 22.13, which she posted at the National Championships in June. She will be joined in the event by compatriots Anneisha McClaughlin, the 2009 World Championships finalist, and Patricia Hall, who made the 400m semi-finals a few days ago. The women's 200m heats will start at 1:55 a.m. (Jamaica time), with the semi-final set for 10:45 a.m. Triple-jump finalist Williams is hoping to join 2005 World champion Trecia Smith as Jamaica's only medallist in the event at this level. Williams, who qualified for the final with a 14.36m mark, is set to jump off at 10:40 a.m. in the medal round. |
