CNN poll says ... Jamaicans third coolest people |
|||||
Jamaicans are considered the world's third coolest people according to a recently compiled and released list by CNN freelance writer Barry Neild. Jamaicans were only outdone by Singaporeans and Brazilians, who were listed second and first on the cool list, respectively. The list that features 14 countries highlights high and low points of the nationalities considered. In Jamaica's case, Neild unsurprisingly identifies our high crime rate and intolerance of homosexuals as the most noteworthy low points. Not so cool: High murder rate and widespread homophobia. On the other hand, Neild highlights one of reggae music's most celebrated exponents as a high point. Icon of cool: Jimmy Cliff. The Harder They Come singer is still bringing it at 65. "There's more to Jamaicans than reggae, including Rastafarian (the most kick-back religion ever invented), an accent that's the envy of the English-speaking world and the planet's most distinctive and recognisable hairstyle," Neild wrote. "Note to backpackers: Dreadlocks only cool on actual Jamaicans," he added. The article has been garnering mixed reviews on social media sites like Facebook and on CNN travel page. Karelle Elizabeth posted on the travel page, " what's sweet is that others are 'Chinese', 'Indians', 'Spanish' etc ... Jamaica is just Jamaica ... not 'the islands' or 'Caribbean people' ... Just JAMAICANS ... and the truth is ... we are kinda cool! lol #islandlife #happypeople ". Neil Davis posted, "Jamaica!!! Jamaica!!! ... l Love my country and my people. What is not cool is using a guy to represent us, who is not 'fully' Jamaican. (He was not born in Jamaica) what happen to Shelly-Ann, Asafa, Bolt, Blake, VCB? ". On the other hand, Paul Elliot had rather unkind words about the ranking. He posted, "Chupidniss. Coolest ... how that defined? Who compiled the list? They can't even use the term Botswanian? Chupid thing designed as smoke and mirrors, and we all too eager to ... to ... run wid it. Another mockery of the 'happy go lucky' accent like the VW ad ... Yah mon. We going to run wid this foolinish, Jamaicans? ". |
