Jimmie, Star Racing Writer
TYPEWRITER can stake his claim as successor to MARK MY WORD by topping a crack graded-stakes field in tomorrow's 2000-metre Prime Minister's Stakes. The four-year-old gelding has been slapped with top-weight 57 kilos against COMMANDING CHIEF (52.0), REASONABLE PRESS (55.0) and CLASSY PROSPECT (54.0), who scored a commanding victory at 1400 metres on July 24. Also in the line-up with a feather to tote are TIME FOR ARMS (50.5) and dangerous two-turn specialist RAGING PROSPECT at 50. Last year's derby and St Leger winner, TYPEWRITER has beaten all his rivals in previous races, bar COMMANDING CHIEF. In his lone race against the tough five-year-old, TYPEWRITER had finished a length and three quarter behind him for sixth place in last November's Superstakes. TYPEWRITER, a three-year-old then, was in receipt of seven pounds from COMMANDING CHIEF, who is now 11 pounds lighter, representing an 18lb swing in his favour. Everal Francis' COMMANDING CHIEF was last year touted as the horse to challenge MARK MY WORD for the Superstakes crown after narrowly losing to the champion stayer in 2011. However, after battling MARK MY WORD to a neck in a grueling Governor General's Stakes clash, a month before the Superstakes, COMMANDING CHIEF failed to reproduce that effort and stayed on to grab fourth place from TYPEWRITER on the big day. At 52.0 kilos, COMMANDING CHIEF appears a cinch. He is also handicapped to turn the tables on REASONABLE PRESS who beat him in back-to-back races. Going a mile in May, REASONABLE PRESS allowed COMMANDING CHIEF three pounds and won by a head. The following month, the United States-bred horse returned eight pounds lighter than COMMANDING CHIEF and hung on to score by three quarters of a length at 1500 metres. Though the scales point to a victory for COMMANDING CHIEF, the pace of the race is set up for TYPEWRITER to mow down his lighter rivals. CLASSY PROSPECT is in fine form after beating REASONABLE PRESS by one and a quarter length at 1400 metres on July 24, carrying 55.0 kilos, two pounds lighter than the American. Speed is CLASSY PROSPECT's game and he will be on the lead, or thereabout, from the word go. COMMANDING CHIEF will also be on the pace, so too the very light RAGING PROSPECT, ensuring a true pace down the backstretch. TYPEWRITER could have done well with an apprentice rider slipping a few kilos. However, the classy gelding enjoys stalking a warm pace and should be closing best off the turn. It's a tough ask at 57.0 kilos but the leaders are set to play into TYPEWRITER's hand. |
